Karate, often referred to as a martial art or combat discipline, encompasses a diverse range of techniques including blocks, strikes, evasions, throws, and joint manipulations.
Within our karate classes, we focus on three fundamental elements: kihon (the basics), kata (forms), and kumite (sparring).
“Kihon” in karate refers to the fundamental basics of the martial art. It includes essential techniques such as stances, strikes, blocks, and kicks. Kihon serves as the cornerstone for advanced movements, playing a critical role in developing strength, balance, and proper form throughout karate training.
“Kata” in karate refers to a structured sequence of movements and techniques. serve as a valuable method for practicing and perfecting an array of techniques, aiding in the development of muscle memory, balance, and precision in the realm of martial arts.
Kata is a key component of traditional karate class, helping practitioners develop both physical and mental discipline.
“Kumite” in karate is a term that denotes sparring or engaging in combat with an opponent. It is a practical application of the techniques learned in kihon (basics) and kata (forms). Kumite allows practitioners to test and refine their skills, emphasizing control, timing, and strategy while engaging in controlled combat scenarios.
In our karate class, as a beginner, everyone starts from the white belt (9th kyu in our Inoue-ha Shito-ryu style) symbolizing the superficial knowledge of the given Karate style.
As you progress in Shito Ryu Karate, your belt color deepens, following a structured belt system and grading process. Upon achieving the brown belt (1st kyu), you’ve honed your knowledge and skills.
Advancing to the coveted black belt (1st dan) signifies mastery of Karate’s basics and fundamentals.
